Traditionally there have been two distinct categories of video editing solutions:
- Proprietary editing cards designed specifically for video editing. These are feature-packed with realtime video processing capabilities like those included with EDIUS NLE Systems from Canopus.
- Standard OHCI cards which are inexpensive and widely used for DV (digital video) editing.
OHCI DV solutions are suitable for a wide variety of applications. They offer cross-platform OS compatibility (PC and Mac), DV camera device control as well as compatibility with a wide range of editing software applications. However OHCI has never provided compatibility or connectivity with widely used analog video equipment and formats including VHS, S-VHS and Hi8.
OHCI (Open Host Controller Interface) is a digital transfer protocol allowing vendors of hardware devices and software programs, to communicate and plug into an open standard interface. OHCI devices include hard disk drives, scanners, printers and MP3 players. OHCI eliminates the need for specific device drivers for every product and the possible instability of such drivers. The initial problem with OHCI was the stability of this protocol, particularly for DV editing. This stability issue has improved dramatically in the past few years and will continue to improve as this standard is developed further.
In short, OHCI is a standard protocol suitable for bidirectional digital data transfer (i.e. DV) between a camera and the computer system. OHCI does not assist in processing the video once it has been captured.
Canopus has been a leader in professional video editing solutions for 12 years. Canopus products feature rich, professional editing capabilities and are purpose-built to process video without compromising quality, speed or functionality. Unlike OHCI solutions, Canopus products have the ability to capture and output video using either an analog or digital source. Video captured with Canopus products is of the highest possible quality.
ACEDVio takes the traditional functionality of OHCI DV boards and enhances this with Canopus’s traditional strengths in superior analog-to-DV and DV-to-analog video conversion.
ACEDVio features composite and S-Video analog video input and output capability:
- The analog input adds the versatility of converting analog video to DV, using the industry's highest quality conversion technology. Standard OHCI cards do not offer this feature.
- The analog output facilitates output of DV back to analog video equipment, as well as providing editors with realtime video preview to a TV or monitor while editing. Canopus is the only company with the expertise to bring analog output to this class of PCI board (OHCI).
- ACEDVio together with EDIUS Pro, Vegas or Final Cut Pro software offers realtime analog video preview functionality not available on any other OHCI card.
- Many OHCI card vendors have little or no experience in video editing technology, whereas Canopus applies experience and technical expertise from both a video and an OHCI perspective.
ACEDVio combines the sheer versatility and compatibility of OHCI with the years of high-end video experience that Canopus offers, to deliver a reliable, real world solution for video professionals and enthusiasts.
